MIPS and MEPS

Maximal Inspiratory Pressures (MIP), Maximal Expiratory Pressures (MEP), and Sniff Nasal Inspiratory Pressure (SNIP) are used to measure the strength of the respiratory muscles.

The MIP is a global measure of the inspiratory muscle strength, primarily the diaphragm, and allows respiratory specialists to assess for ventilatory failure and lung disease. This is a quick, non-invasive test. Patients will be asked to breathe out as long as they are able to, before sucking on a mouthpiece for at least one second.

The MEP is a non-invasive, clinically useful technique to measure the strength of the respiratory muscles that help you breathe out. Patients will be asked to breathe in deeply first, and then blow out as hard as they can into a mouthpiece with a small orifice.
